“Who Wins on the Seesaw?”

April 29, 2025

A Childhood Game with Deeper Lesson

We’ve all played on a seesaw at some point in our childhood.

Two people. Two ends. One goes up, the other comes down.

And then again, and again, and again.

The rhythm continues—not because someone wins or loses—but simply because we keep playing.

No one stays on top forever.

No one remains below.

There’s no score.

Just motion. Just movement. Just a dance between two ends.

This simple game offers a powerful metaphor for something far more complex: the relationship between our mind and our body.

The Mind and Body: Two ends of one see saw.

On one end sits the mind—active, fast, full of thoughts.

Thinking about the past. Predicting the future. Worrying, imagining, analyzing, storytelling.

The mind is a busy place.

On the other end sits the body—anchored in the now.

Buzzing with sensations. Some pleasant, some uncomfortable. Tensions, aches, pulses, flutters.

The body speaks in a language that doesn’t always use words.

And so the seesaw begins.

Sometimes, the mind takes over—thinking spirals, mental noise, over-analysis.

Sometimes, the body takes over—waves of emotion, discomfort, or tension flooding the system.

Neither one is wrong. Neither one is right.

Neither wins. Neither loses.

They are simply parts of a whole, playing a rhythm—like they always have.

Awareness is the Balancing Point

The Key is Balance. The Key is Awareness.

What happens when you feel pain in your body?

Can you pause and wonder, what’s happening in my mind right now?

What happens when you feel flooded with thoughts?

Can you gently ask, what’s my body feeling right now?

This is the heart of Somatic Experiencing (SE).

Not trying to silence the mind.

Not trying to push away the body.

But simply becoming curious, again and again.

Curious about the movement. Curious about the seesaw.

It’s Not about Fixing, Just Noticing

You Don’t Have to Fix It. Just Notice It.

Healing doesn’t come from choosing the “right” side.

It comes from learning how to notice the rhythm

how to rest when it’s too much,

how to return when you’re ready,

and how to trust that over time, your system will find its own balance.

This balance brings with it a quiet sense of ease.

Safety. Groundedness.

The very conditions your nervous system needs for trauma to release, for healing to happen—not all at once, but gently, in its own time.

What Somatic Experiencing can offer you ?

SE helps you build awareness between the mind and the body.

It helps you track, notice, and stay with yourself—bit by bit—without overwhelming, without judgment.

And if you feel like it’s hard to make sense of your sensations…

If the thoughts feel too loud…

If you feel disconnected from your body…

You don’t have to figure it out alone.

Just find a Somatic Experiencing practitioner.

Take a few sessions.

That’s it.

You’ll be surprised at how much can shift just by turning toward yourself with curiosity.

Keep playing. Keep noticing. Keep finding the balance.

There’s no winner on this seesaw but there is wisdom, healing, and a quiet joy in learning how to ride it well.
